Obesity is the condition that the fat mass in the body increases excessively as compared to nonfat mass including muscular, skeletal and water. The energy amount taken in with foods being equal to the energy consumed, and additionally, proportional distribution of this anergy among micro and macro nutrients is the definition of balanced and sufficient nutrition. In our times, the lack of this balance has given rise to many health problems with obesity in the first place. Maintaining the ideal weight with healthy and balanced nutrition is rather important to be protected from obesity and many acute and chronic diseases it causes. In our times, obesity is considered as a complex metabolic disease with adverse effects on multiple organ systems rather than a cosmetic problem.

The most important cause of obesity is moving too little and consuming too much food. In particular, consumption of foods rich in fat and sugar, having an imbalanced nutritional plan even without high energy content, and lack of sufficient physical activity will lead to depositing the energy taken in as fat in the body.

Causes of obesity are as follows:

  • Consumption of food in excessive amounts, and particularly fast food,
  • Flack of physical activity,
  • Genetic factors,
  • Inability of the thyroid to produce hormones in sufficient amounts,
  • Cushing Syndrome, which causes the steroid hormones in excessive amounts, also causes obesity.

The only and most effective therapy for obesity is diet. If it is understood after all the examinations and evaluations of the doctor that there is an obstacle against losing weight, the patient will be referred to a dietician following the medical treatment.

The dietician will calculate the daily energy and nutrient requirements by taking the issues like the level of mobility, age, gender and health status of the individual. Drugs must not be used without consulting the doctor to avoid irreversible problems in an attempt to lose weight. An endocrinologist must be consulted to lose weight, and drug therapy must be used under control only if the required criteria are met.
